Airsoft & BB Guns in South Africa: A Beginner's Guide
Updated July 2026 · 7 min read
Airsoft is one of the fastest-growing weekend sports in South Africa — and target shooting in the back garden is a cheap, genuinely fun hobby. This guide covers the rules, the gear, and which starter pistol to buy first.
The legal bit (read this first)
- You must be 18 or older to buy an airsoft or BB gun.
- Transport it in a bag or case — never visible in public.
- Use it on private property with permission, or at a registered airsoft field.
- Never point it at people who aren't wearing eye protection, and never at animals.

6mm airsoft vs 4.5mm BB: which do you want?
6mm plastic BBs are the airsoft standard — lighter, safer for skirmish games, and cheap by the thousand. 4.5mm steel BBs hit harder and suit static target shooting, but they ricochet and should never be fired at a person. Beginners should start with a 6mm spring pistol: no gas, no batteries, very forgiving.
Spring, gas or electric?
- Spring: cock it each shot. Cheapest, most reliable, best first buy.
- Gas / CO₂: semi-auto with realistic blowback. Needs gas top-ups.
- AEG (electric): full-auto rifles for field play. A bigger investment.
BB pistols and bullet packs
Grab spare BBs while you're here — they run out faster than you'd think.
The safety kit you actually need
- Full-seal goggles (not shooting glasses) — mandatory.
- A face or mesh mask if you're playing against other people.
- Gloves and long sleeves for close-quarters games.
- A lockable case so the gun stays away from children.
Looking after your pistol
Wipe it down after every session, store it uncocked with the magazine out, and use silicone oil (never WD-40) on gas models. Cheap, poor-quality BBs are the number-one cause of jams — buy polished 0.20g or 0.25g BBs and your gun will last years.
FAQ
Are airsoft BB guns legal in South Africa?
Airsoft and BB guns firing under 6mm plastic pellets are generally not classified as firearms under the Firearms Control Act, but you must be 18+, transport them concealed, and only use them on private property or a registered field.
What BB size do airsoft pistols use?
Most airsoft pistols use 6mm plastic BBs. Metal BB pistols typically use 4.5mm steel BBs and are more powerful — check your model before buying ammo.
Do I need eye protection?
Always. Full-seal ANSI-rated goggles are non-negotiable for any airsoft skirmish or backyard target practice.
